Up two games to one, Metropolis has its mid-season acquisition, Anibal
Sanchez, on the mound. The visiting Santa Barbara Outlaws are trusting
lefty Madison Bumgarner to get them the win to even the series at two.
The
Outlaws jumped on Sanchez right away when leadoff hitter Denard Span
singled to start the game. Everyone in the stadium knew Span was going
to try and steal second base, but Sanchez managed to keep him close for a
few pitches. Span took off with the count 2-2, but didn't get his
stolen base. Instead, Jose Altuve ripped the pitch into the gap and Span used his
big jump to round second and third on the way to scoring easily on Altuve's
double. After just two hitters the Outlaws were up 1-0 and looking to
add more. Sanchez, however, kept Altuve from scoring and induced
consecutive ground outs from Jason Heyward, Buster Posey, and JD
Martinez to escape the inning.
Span was critical in putting the Outlaws in the lead, but he was just as critical in letting the Avengers tie the game. Andrew McCutchen started the bottom of the inning with a single and Robinson Cano then hit a fly ball deep to right center. Span got a great jump on the ball and was in position to make the play, but he somehow missed the catch and ball bounced off his glove for a two-base error. One batter later, Melky Cabrera hit a ground ball to Altuve, driving home McCutchen to tie the game at one.
Metropolis took the lead in the bottom of the second. Jayson Werth started the frame with a double and scored when catcher Chris Iannetta doubled one out later. McCutchen followed with a single and the Avengers had runners on the corners for Cano. The veteran Avenger didn't get a hit, but only because Altuve made a fantastic play on a sharp groundball. He nailed Cano at first, but Iannetta scored easily and McCutchen advanced to second. The Outlaws intentionally walked Steve Pearce with two outs, choosing instead to face Cabrera in the clutch. It was the right decision, as Cabrera hit an easy fly ball to end the inning. Despite stranding two runners, the Avengers also scored two runs and took a 3-1 lead after two innings.
The Outlaws stranded runners in scoring position in both the third and fourth innings. Span and Posey each doubled, but their teammates failed to drive them in. In the bottom of the fourth inning McCutchen hit his sixth home run of the post season. This one was an opposite-field line drive down the line for a 4-1 Avenger lead.
The Outlaws were in a hole but started to climb out in the top of the fifth inning. Elvis Andrus walked with one out and stole second to get into scoring position. Span hit a ball up the middle, which shortstop Jose Reyes fielded and then threw away. They scored it a single and an error, with Andrus scoring on the play and Span ending up on second base. Heyward singled with two out, but Span decided against challenging Jose Bautista's throwing arm and held at third. The Avengers made a somewhat surprising call to the bullpen and Joaquin Benoit relieved Sanchez after just 4 2/3 innings. Benoit got the job done when Posey hit a fly ball to end the inning and strand two runners.
Jose Bautista's strong throwing arm likely saved a run in the top of the fifth and his bat scored one in the bottom of the fifth. He started the inning and hit a Bumgarner fastball for a rocket home run to straight-away center field. The homer was Bautista's second of the post season and put the Avengers up 5-2.
From that point on, the Metropolis bullpen took over. Benoit retired Posey to end the fifth and then retired the next eight hitters in a row before giving the ball to Craig Kimbrel with two outs in the eighth inning. Kimbrel worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning and then worked around a one-out walk and a wild pitch in the ninth inning. Kimbrel finished off the Outlaws to preserve his club's 5-2 lead and put his team one win from a title. Benoit and Kimbrel combined for 4 1/3 hitless innings of relief and allowed just one base runner while striking out four Outlaws.
Having won three games in a row, Metropolis will look to close out the 2015 Brassall World Series in Game Five tomorrow night. Carlos Carrasco hopes to avenge his Game One loss and give his team its third title in four years. The visiting Outlaws will need a strong game from Hiroki Kuroda to send the series back to Santa Barbara.
