The Santa Barbara Outlaws hosted the Metropolis Avengers in Game One of the 2015 Brassball World Series. This is the third time these teams have met in the last four years to determine the Brassball champion. Metropolis got the best of Santa Barbara in 2012 and the Outlaws got their revenge in 2013. So, you can consider this the rubber match.
The Outlaws sent righty Hiroki Kuroda to the mound for Game One. The Avengers countered with their own righty, Carlos Carrasco. Kuroda allowed a one-out single in the first, but struck out Steve Pearce and Matt Wieters to avoid any damage.
Veteran Avenger SS Jose Reyes looked a bit nervous as he booted an easy ground ball from leadoff hitter Denard Span. Jose Altuve drilled a double to the gap on the next pitch and Span scored from first, putting the Outlaws on the board 1-0. Altuve then scored easily on a Jason Heyward single and the Outlaws were ahead 2-0.
Carrasco was in a quick hole, but got a double play from Buster Posey to erase Heyward and clear the bases. However, Santa Barbara simply restarted their rally. Back-to-back-to-back singles by JD Martinez, Edgar Encarnacion, and Rickie Weeks drove home another run and gave the home-town Outlaws an early 3-0 lead.
Metropolis started to fight back in the top of the second. Jose Bautista hit a long double to start the frame and Melky Cabrera drove him home with a single up the middle. After two outs, Jose Reyes hit a double down the line, but Cabrera got a poor jump and was not able to score on the play. Andrew McCutchen stranded both of them when he struck out to end the inning, with the score narrowed to 3-1.
It was still a two-run lead as the game moved to the fourth inning. Jayson Werth legged out an infield single with one out and hoped to start a rally. Pablo Sandoval struck out for the second out of the inning, but Jose Reyes picked up the two-out RBI when he hit a triple between CF Span and RF Heyward. That made the score 3-2 and put the tying run just 90 feet away. Unfortunately for Metropolis fans, Reyes was left on third when McCutchen hit a fly ball to end the inning.
Santa Barbara got that run back in the bottom of the fourth. Nolan Arenado hit a leadoff double and moved to third on an Elvis Andrus sacrifice bunt. Span hit a fly ball ball and Arenado scored just ahead of Werth's throw to the plate, putting Santa Barbara up 4-2.
The Outlaw hits kept coming in the fifth inning. Heyward singled with one out and Posey drove him home with a double to the gap. Posey was caught between second and third on the play and thrown out, but his drive extended the lead to three. The base running gaffe was costly, as Martinez followed with a single that likely would have scored Posey. Even with that mistake, Santa Barbara was up 5-2 as the game moved to the late innings.
Kuroda didn't come out for the sixth, as Santa Barbara gave the ball to lefty Sean Doolittle to start the inning. Melky Cabrera gave him a rude welcome, as he connected with a Doolittle fastball for a deep homer to left field for the third Avenger run of the game.
Outlaw righty Jonathan Papelbon was in for the eighth inning to protect the two-run lead. He struck out Bautista and retired Cabrera, but left an off-speed pitch over the plate for Werth. The bearded slugger didn't miss the pitch and his homer made it a 5-4 game, but the Avengers were running out of time.
Andrew Miller was on the mound to close out the game in the ninth. He got two outs, but Robinson Cano kept Metropolis alive with a single over Altuve's glove. Steve Pearce came to bat as the go-ahead run, but didn't get to face Miller. Instead, Ken Giles got the call and did the job. He retired Pearce on a fly ball to end the inning and give the Outlaws the win in Game One.
With the first game in the books, Metropolis will call on Corey Kluber to tie the series in Game Two. Santa Barbara's Alex Cobb takes the ball for Santa Barbara, who hopes to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the series.
