Brassball World Series Metropolis vs. Santa Barbara - Game Five

The Brassball World Series became a best-of-three affair after the Santa Barbara Outlaws and Metropolis Avengers split the first four games 2-2.  Game Five is often a pivotal game in a best-of-seven series and the teams sent their #2 starters to try for the win.  The hometown Avengers sent Doug Fister, looking to improve on his disastrous Game Two start in which he gave up five runs in just 1/3 of an inning.  Metropolis rallied to win that game, but Fister obviously has a lot to prove.  Santa Barbara countered with Jered Weaver, who had his own struggles in Game Two, giving up eight runs in 4 2/3 innings of work.

Jose Reyes tripled and scored the game's first run.
Fister and Weaver obviously fixed whatever had ailed them in Game Two.  Both starters cruise through the first four innings, allowing just one base runner each.  Fister allowed a two-out single to Adrian Gonzalez in the first and Weaver was stung for a leadoff triple by Avenger shortstop Jose Reyes in the bottom of the fourth.  Jose Bautista hit a fly ball to score Reyes and put the Avengers up 1-0 going into the fifth inning.

Wieters doubled in Duda for a 2-0 lead.
Metropolis added another run in the bottom of the fifth.  Weaver retired the first two hitters before first baseman Lucas Duda singled.  Catcher Matt Wieters hit a line drive the other way, splitting the outfielders and sending Duda home for a 2-0 Avenger lead.

Fister remained in control, retiring the Outlaws in order in the top of the sixth.  He walked Elvis Andrus to start the seventh and Metropolis went to the bullpen.  Jeremy Affeldt came in to face Adrian Gonzalez, who singled to bring the go-ahead run to the plate.  Affeldt stayed in to face righty Alex Rodriguez, who hit a ball deep into the outfield for a sacrifice fly and the first Outlaw run.  Affeldt then struck out Carlos Gonzalez for the second out.  Craig Kimbrel came in and got Brandon Phillips to end the inning and strand Adrian Gonzalez to keep the score 2-1.

Corey Hart's third homer of the World Series
capped the scoring in the 4-1 Avenger lead.
Andrew McCutchen singled to start the bottom of the inning as Metropolis looked to extend its lead.  Alex Gordon struck out, but Corey Hart hit his third home run of series, and second off Weaver, to make the score 4-1.

Kimbrel retired the Outlaws in the eighth and stayed in for the ninth.  He gave up a single to Adrian Gonzalez and then uncorked a wild pitch, but struck out ARod and finished the game with a Carlos Gonzalez ground out.
The win gave Metropolis a 3-2 lead in the series as the teams travel back to Santa Barbara.  Although the Avengers only need to win one of the next two games, everyone knows they hope to finish it in Game Six, against Outlaw starter Matt Garza.  That way they can avoid facing Justin Verlander in Game Seven.  Kyle Lohse will get the Game Six assignment for Metropolis, his first start of the World Series.
