2013 NLCS Game One - Metropolis vs. Fleetwood

Avenger ace R.A. Dickey hoped
to stake Metropolis to a series lead.
The Fleetwood Walkers (108-54) defeated the Glen Allen Mets (100-62) four games to two in one NLDS series and advanced to face the Metropolis Avengers (117-45) who defeated the Parkland Green (94-68) four games to none.  The series opener paired the two leading NL Cy Young candidates in Avenger R.A. Dickey (21-4, 2.49 ERA) and Walker Zack Greinke (21-8, 2.79) in a ballpark that already favored pitchers.

The Walkers sent designated hitter Nick Markakis to the plate to lead off the NLCS and Dickey retired him quickly on a ground ball.  After Walker center fielder Mike Trout struck out, Matt Joyce walked to become the game's first baserunner.  The inning ended when Miguel Cabrera popped a knuckleball to third baseman David Freese.

Chase Utley's homer tied
the game 1-1.
Metropolis immediately put pressure on Greinke, as lead off hitter Carlos Ruiz doubled to lead off the bottom of the first.  Robinson Cano followed and grounded out, but he moved Ruiz to third on the play.  Avenger center fielder Andrew McCutchen then walked to put more pressure on Greinke.  Alex Gordon laced a clean single, sending Ruiz home with the game's first run and McCutchen to third.  Greinke escaped without further damage, but Metropolis was on the board first.

The 1-0 lead didn't last long, as Chase Utley hit a one-out homer to tie the game in the top of the second.  Utley came to Fleetwood in an off-season trade with Tinley with hopes that he would pay dividends in the postseason.  That's exactly what he did in his first NLCS at bat, tying the game 1-1.

Mike Trout' also homered
to tie the game.
Metropolis responded in the bottom of the second when Cano singled home Andy Dirks, who had singled earlier in the inning.  That restored the Avengers' one-run lead and put two runners on for McCutchen, their best hitter all season and in the NLDS.  Greinke won the battle and McCutchen grounded out to end the inning, leaving Ruiz and Cano on base.

Just like a champion boxer, Fleetwood took that punch and came back swinging, this time with another solo home run.  This one was by Trout, who forced Dickey to throw a 3-0 fastball which wasn't quite fast enough.  Dickey had allowed just two hits through three innings, but both were homers and the game was knotted at two.

The top of the fourth was no different.  Cabrera led off the inning with a hit - yet another solo homer.  This one finally put Fleetwood in the lead 3-2.  When he wasn’t surrendering solo homers, Dickey was crisp.  After the Cabrera solo shot, he struck out David Wright, got a weak grounder from Utley and then K’d Torii Hunter to end the inning.
Rookie Bryce Harper's homer drove
Zack Greinke to the showers.

Fleetwood held their lead into the bottom of the fifth, when Avenger third baseman David Freese singled to lead off the inning.  That brought up hyped rookie outfielder Bryce Harper, who brought the fans to their feet when he took a Greinke fastball deep into right field for a two run homer.  That gave Dickey back his one-run lead (4-3) and moved the game to the sixth inning.

Dickey protected the lead in the top of the sixth and the top of the Avenger lineup was due up in the bottom of the frame.  Fleetwood sent Greinke back to the mound, despite a high pitch count thanks to the eight Avenger hits, four walks and five strikeouts through five innings.  Ruiz took advantage of an off-speed pitch Greinke left over the plate, driving it just over the wall in left-center.  That shot extended the Metropolis lead to 5-3 and sent Fleetwood to their bullpen.  Steve Johnson came in and gave up a double to Cano, but then struck out McCutchen, Gordon and Freese in order to end the inning.

Harper's blast in the eighth
put the game out of reach.
Fleetwood scored a run in the top of the seventh off reliever Huston Street.  Carlos Quentin pinch hit with two runners on and hit a sacrifice fly to knock in Utley.  The Walkers took their one run to make the game 5-4, but were looking for more, as they knew the Metropolis was not only strong and deep, but also well-rested after a short NLDS.

Harper led off the bottom of the seventh and Johnson appeared committed to challenging the kid with his fastball.  Harper was up to the challenge and squared up a 97-mph heater, launching it deep into the right field stands for his second round tripper of the game.  The nineteen year old has obvious power, but hit just nine homers during the regular season.  After turning on the Johnson fastball, Harper had two in his first four NLCS at bats.

Harper's homer gave Metropolis a two-run lead and their bullpen wasn't about to let it slip away.  Raul Valdes and Craig Kimbrel each gave up a single baserunner, but they did their jobs and closed out Game One by a 6-4 score.  That gave Metropolis a 1-0 series lead and put the pressure on Fleetwood to win Game Two to avoid going home in a 2-0 hole.

Coming Up – Game two pairs veteran James Shields and youngster Kris Medlen  Shields was a solid #2 behind Greinke (17-6, 3.54 ERA).  Medlen was brilliant after donning an Avenger hat in a midseason trade from Springfield.  He went a perfect 8-0 with a 2.06 ERA and allowed just 46 hits in 70 innings.
